A tribute medley has to choose what to include and make the chosen pieces work together. The 2023 CMA Awards’ Jimmy Buffett tribute offers a concrete example. CMA’s own account identifies A Pirate Looks at Forty and Margaritaville as the two songs in a shared presentation by Kenny Chesney, Mac McAnally, Zac Brown Band and Alan Jackson.
The lineup matters as well as the titles. CMA identifies McAnally as a member of Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. That provides a documented musical connection within the ensemble without requiring an imagined account of what every participant privately felt.
The medley as its own performance

Two familiar songs do not automatically become a coherent medley by being placed next to each other. The arrangement needs a route through them: a way to establish the first selection, pass attention among the performers and make the next title feel intentional.
A television tribute also has a public subject beyond any one featured singer. Recognition points toward the artist being remembered, while the people onstage have to make the material work in the present. These are complementary responsibilities rather than a choice between fidelity and individuality.
Three things the combined program can do
- Introduce range: two selections can show more than one part of a songwriter’s repertoire.
- Share responsibility: several performers can distribute the central musical statement.
- Create a route: the transition gives the combined performance a shape beyond either song alone.
The third point is easy to overlook. A listener may recognize both titles and concentrate on favorite moments, but the space between the selections determines how they belong together. A change can feel like a fresh start, an extension or a deliberately strong contrast.
Follow the end of one selection and the opening of the next as a single event. Keep track of what provides continuity: a musical pulse, an instrumental contribution or the way a new featured line is introduced. There is no need to guess at the exact arrangement meeting or rehearsal process to consider the result.

Buffett’s recording lets the first composition occupy its own frame. Without the neighboring song and shared tribute lineup, its phrases belong to a different overall proportion. Compare that complete-song context with the role a selection plays inside a medley.
A shortened or rearranged presentation does not make the rest of a composition unimportant. It reflects the needs of another format, where a portion must contribute to a larger public program.

The official audio supplies the same kind of reference for the second title. A familiar song can carry associations beyond its recorded sound, but its musical organization still deserves attention. Follow the relationship between the central line and the parts that keep it moving.
The three selections make the tribute easier to understand as a piece of programming. The individual recordings establish separate compositions; the CMA performance connects them through a new ensemble and occasion. That connection offers more to explore than a list of famous people sharing the stage: it shows how selected repertoire can become a purposeful, continuous public remembrance.
