A two-song tribute can create a small catalogue journey as well as a continuous performance. Bruno Mars’s Sting Honors selection joins So Lonely with Message in a Bottle, material from the Police’s first two studio albums.
The band’s official catalogue places So Lonely on the 1978 debut Outlandos d’Amour. Its own retrospective identifies Reggatta de Blanc as the second album, released in 1979 and including Message in a Bottle. The songs therefore connect neighboring stages of an early recorded history rather than one undifferentiated collection of hits.

An album context gives a song more company
A familiar single can become detached from the record around it. Restoring the album connection gives it another context: it belongs to a set of material presented together at a particular point in a band’s work.
This does not mean a listener needs the complete album history before enjoying a performance. It supplies a useful next step. A tribute selection can lead outward into a repertoire rather than ending with the one clip that first attracted attention.
The two titles create a particularly manageable route because the albums are consecutive. The relationship is concrete enough to follow without inventing a dramatic story in which every later record automatically improves on the earlier one.
Recorded development is not a simple ladder
A second album can extend some identities and create different tasks. It need not erase the first one for a band’s history to develop. Continuity and variation can coexist across neighboring releases.
The same principle applies to the songs’ later live lives. A composition can remain associated with an early album while acquiring other concert arrangements and another interpreter in a tribute. Its release history and performance history answer different questions.
Keeping those histories visible prevents a cover from becoming the apparent origin of familiar material. Mars undertakes the songs in a later public setting; the Police catalogue supplies the earlier recorded relationships.
A tribute selects rather than summarizes
The Kennedy Center identifies Sting as the 2014 honoree and Mars as the performer of the two Police pieces. This selection provides one emphasis within recognition of a larger career.
Two songs cannot stand for every musical direction associated with an artist. That limit is useful rather than a flaw. A compact selection invites attention to particular material, then leaves room for further listening.
‘So Lonely’ in the band’s concert record
The next official catalogue selection places So Lonely at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires. It adds a live event connection while preserving the composition’s earlier album identity.

Another live route into ‘Message in a Bottle’
The final official Police upload presents the second title live. The same repertoire can therefore be encountered through original release context, the band’s concert work and another artist’s tribute.

The set becomes a compact listening route: begin with the medley, restore each song’s album company, then hear another live presentation. That gives the tribute a specific relationship to early Police history without turning two titles into a complete career summary.
