The Animals Then, Eric Burdon Later: Keeping the Band Credit Clear

The same singer can connect recordings separated by decades without making every one a performance by the same band lineup. Eric Burdon’s Rai “House of the Rising Sun” appearance is introduced under his name. The accompanying Ed Sullivan footage is identified with the Animals. Those credits have a historical relationship, but they are not interchangeable personnel lists.

Rai’s own page dates Burdon’s I migliori anni appearance to April 27, 2024, and identifies his association with the Animals. The program’s framing explains why the familiar repertoire appears there while keeping the actual television occasion distinct.

A lead singer can carry a public association

Listeners often recognize a song through a singer’s voice, and that association can remain strong across different performing groups. It does not follow that every musician around the singer belongs to the original band or that an older arrangement is reproduced unchanged.

Use the stated credit at the level it supports: Burdon performing on Rai in 2024. If a complete supporting lineup is not supplied, leave it unspecified rather than filling it with familiar names from the Animals’ earlier history.

The Sullivan appearance has its own date

The Ed Sullivan Show’s official archive identifies the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” appearance with October 18, 1964. That is a documented band television context, not simply an earlier upload of the Rai performance.

Keeping the dates and billing together makes the comparison more informative. One performer supplies continuity, while the surrounding institution, ensemble, and recording presentation can change. The singer’s presence is a connection, not a certificate that everything else stayed fixed.

A band name is not a session credit

A title such as “Eric Burdon & the Animals” can point to an artist’s performing identity. It does not automatically name every participant in the clip or establish a specific historical lineup. Detailed personnel claims need a program, release credit, or another direct source.

The final upload is explicitly unofficial and labels the performance live in 2011. That description is useful as an attributed label, but it is not enough to reconstruct a full tour history or declare an original-band reunion.

Compare the arrangement without inventing the players

A listener can still follow the music when a lineup is incomplete. Identify the principal vocal line, the recurring instrumental support, and the way a phrase reaches its conclusion. Describe the relationship that is audible rather than attaching an unverified musician’s name to it.

For example, “the accompaniment carries the passage between vocal entries” describes a musical function. Naming a specific keyboard player makes a personnel claim. The first can be useful even when the second is not documented.

The song is another layer again

“House of the Rising Sun” also has a traditional history before the Animals’ influential recording. Its association with Burdon is therefore a performing relationship, not proof that he originated the composition.

The set is clearest when three identities remain distinct: the inherited song, the named singer, and the particular ensemble or program. That approach preserves the continuity of Burdon’s repertoire while giving each documented performance its own historical place.
