“How Great Thou Art” Across Underwood’s Concert and Album Repertoire

The 2011 Gill collaboration and a later official performance belong to different contexts. Place the hymn within Underwood’s concert history and My Savior album without merging them.

“How Great Thou Art” Across Underwood’s Concert and Album Repertoire

Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill’s “How Great Thou Art” belongs to the 2011 Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country concert. It should be kept separate from Underwood’s later gospel-album project, even though the hymn appears in both parts of her repertoire.

Underwood’s official announcement identifies the tribute concert’s April 4, 2011, taping at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A later official notice identifies its April 22 CBS airing. Those dates describe recording and broadcast, not two separate performances of the Gill collaboration.

A tribute concert supplies the first frame

The principal upload names Underwood and Gill at Girls’ Night Out. Its shared performing credit is the useful starting point. The occasion honors women in country music; it is not simply an unidentified worship-service recording.

A hymn can appear in a concert while retaining its religious text and history. The event context identifies where this interpretation is presented. It does not establish the beliefs of everyone watching or require a claim that every audience member experienced the same response.

A collaboration can distribute different responsibilities

The featured voice and guitar contribution make the partnership more specific than a pair of names. A musician can support a sung line, become prominent in an instrumental passage, and then return to accompaniment. Those changes of function are part of an arrangement rather than a hierarchy of importance.

For a focused viewing, follow what continues when the principal vocal phrase ends. The instrumental connection can preserve the music’s direction while attention prepares for another entry. That relationship is often lost when a performance is reduced to its biggest held note.

The second upload is another presentation

The next clip identifies the same Gill–Underwood Girls’ Night Out pairing. It should not be counted as a second concert merely because another publisher provides a different title or view.

The album gives the song another home

Underwood’s official My Savior track list includes “How Great Thou Art,” alongside titles such as “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” The album was released in March 2021, co-produced and arranged by Underwood and David Garcia.

That project connects the hymn with a sustained album selection rather than a single tribute-concert moment. It does not make Gill a participant in every later recording or mean that an unspecified performance video uses the 2011 arrangement.

Compare the context as well as the song

The final official Underwood performance offers another point of comparison. Keep its individual label and credits attached to it instead of carrying all information from the earlier duet forward.

A useful comparison names what stays constant and what changes: the hymn remains, while the occasion, collaborators, and performing treatment can differ. Those differences let a familiar selection occupy several roles in an artist’s repertoire.

The Gill collaboration can then retain its specific concert identity, while My Savior provides a separate catalog context. Both are clearer when they are connected through the song without being collapsed into one recording history.
