A singer who plays guitar has two responsibilities that cooperate without being identical. Nene Royal’s Black Hole Sun makes that a useful focus. AGT’s official upload identifies the Soundgarden cover as a 2026 quarterfinal selection and labels it with a Golden Buzzer. The musical question is how two front-line roles can contribute to one interpretation.
The performer remains the same across these selections. The songs change from Soundgarden to the Cranberries and the White Stripes. This continuity makes it possible to follow responsibilities without assuming every piece creates the same relationship between voice and instrument.

One person, two kinds of attention
A vocal phrase carries language and melody. A guitar can supply a recurring figure, support harmonic movement or occupy an instrumental passage. When one person undertakes both, the tasks remain distinct. They have to form a practical relationship.
A guitar is not necessarily important simply because it is visible. A more specific account asks what its part does. Something can be essential while comparatively unobtrusive; something can draw immediate attention without carrying the piece’s basic orientation.
The same distinction helps with a sung line. Vocal prominence is an incomplete explanation of direction. A phrase can establish a point of view, connect sections or prepare an arrival. Its relationship with the instrument can be complementary rather than competitive.
Make a responsibility map
Divide your notes into three periods: while a vocal line is active, between sung phrases and during a larger transition. In each period, identify what helps you remain oriented. The answer may change as the piece proceeds.
This produces a more useful observation than describing the guitar as powerful throughout. It identifies a function that can be revisited. It also allows two roles to support each other: instrumental continuation can carry movement while a sung phrase ends, and a vocal return can give a recurring figure another context.
These are possibilities to test against the recording, rather than a supplied transcription of Royal’s notes. A listener does not need to know a chord’s technical name to distinguish a reference point from a featured statement. Naming the job is a useful beginning.
The audition changes the material
The next official clip identifies Zombie as Royal’s audition. It is an earlier program stage and another song, rather than a preliminary version of Black Hole Sun. Keep the responsibility map while allowing the new material to establish its own demands.

Continuity of performer does not require continuity of function. The same instrument may occupy a different role in another piece. That difference is part of the comparison, rather than an inconsistency to explain away.
A recurring figure changes the frame again
AGT labels the last embedded recording Seven Nation Army in its 2026 final. Its association with a recognizable recurring idea creates another situation for considering orientation and foreground attention.

The appearances need not be ranked for this comparison to be worthwhile. Voice and guitar preserve a performer’s identity while doing different work in each piece. The quarterfinal cover provides one point at which to notice that coordination; the audition and final provide other musical situations in which to reconsider it.
