Ndlovu Youth Choir Beyond One Cover: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and Original Repertoire

The isiZulu cover and the choir's original We Will Rise make different authorship relationships visible. A later Queen collaboration adds context without dating the music video.

Ndlovu Youth Choir Beyond One Cover: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and Original Repertoire

A choir’s identity is larger than the familiar song through which a listener first discovers it. Ndlovu Youth Choir’s isiZulu Bohemian Rhapsody video is a useful starting point, but the related original selection We Will Rise gives another route into its repertoire. The two performances have different relationships with authorship and recognition.

The cover begins with a composition associated with Queen and gives it another vocal and linguistic presentation. An original selection begins from another position: the ensemble introduces material without relying on the audience to recognize that earlier song.

The familiar composition as an entry point

A known melody can provide orientation even for a listener who does not understand every word in a new-language version. Recognition and linguistic understanding are separate experiences. The first can draw attention; the second requires its own knowledge or a reliable translation.

That distinction leaves room to hear the choir’s musical identity without pretending that familiarity with Queen automatically explains the isiZulu text. Follow the organization of voices, the boundaries between sections and the relationship between featured and collective material.

A choir is not only the material it borrows

A cover demonstrates choices about an existing composition. It can show how an ensemble redistributes a familiar line, creates contrast or connects sections. Original repertoire offers another kind of information: what musical statement the ensemble chooses to introduce without that borrowed recognition.

These contributions can reinforce each other. A cover may bring a new listener to the choir; another selection can prevent the listener’s understanding from stopping at the comparison with the earlier artist.

Think of a small program with both kinds of material. The familiar title creates a reference, while the less familiar piece asks the listener to follow the performers’ presentation more directly. Neither has to be the sole measure of the ensemble’s value.

The original selection changes the starting point

America’s Got Talent identifies We Will Rise as an original selection in its 2023 All-Stars presentation. The program frame and the song’s authorship relationship differ from the Queen cover.

Compare how a central idea becomes recognizable during the performance. In an original selection, repetition and clear musical development can create familiarity within the piece itself. The viewer need not arrive with a previous recording already in mind.

A documented later connection with Queen

Queen’s own account records the choir appearing at Roger Taylor’s London Roundhouse show in September 2026. Its set list includes the choir’s Bohemian Rhapsody and later shared performances involving Brian May. This is a separate occasion, not a date or venue inferred for the music video above.

The distinction gives the repertoire a continuing public history without collapsing every recording into one event.

The Queen Live Aid selection changes the performers and includes a combined Bohemian Rhapsody / Radio Ga Ga presentation. It is another program choice, not a requirement that every later version reproduce the same excerpt.

Together, the selections offer a broader introduction to the choir: an interpretation of existing repertoire, an original public statement and a relationship with other performances of the familiar composition. That sequence gives listeners a reason to continue beyond the initial recognition of a Queen song.
