Cher Moved to Tears by Adam Lambert’s Unforgettable Performance of “Believe”
Adam Lambert, a former American Idol contestant and the current lead vocalist for Queen, performed Cher’s legendary 1998 song “Believe” at the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2019, moving the iconic pop star to tears. The prestigious awards event, held on December 26, 2018, was televised from the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C., USA. This ceremony celebrates individuals for their lifetime contributions to the arts. Adam Lambert performed as a tribute to Cher, who was one of the esteemed honorees.
Lambert’s rendition of “Believe” was heartfelt and mellow, offering a sharp contrast to the original’s lively and energetic vibe. As Lambert sang, the camera captured Cher visibly emotional, wiping away tears. Three weeks after the performance, Cher expressed her continued emotional response on Twitter, describing it as “BEYOND COMPREHENSION.”
Cher wasn’t the only artist surprised during the Kennedy Center Honors. Rock icon Cyndi Lauper, who had previously informed Cher that she was out of town, unexpectedly performed “If I Could Turn Back Time” for her. Lauper and Lambert concluded the evening with a duet of “I Got You Babe,” delighting the audience.
In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Lambert reflected on his memorable performance of “Believe.” He shared that he was extremely nervous before taking the stage, feeling his heart race. Nonetheless, he felt honored to perform a song by one of the most legendary singers ever. Lambert has admired Cher’s music since his high school days, and her 1998 album, “Believe,” remains one of his favorites.
Lambert’s tribute at the Kennedy Center Honors wasn’t his first homage to a music legend. In 2016, he showcased his impressive vocals in a tribute to George Michael on the TV show “Greatest Hits,” delivering a stunning performance of the 1987 hit “Faith.” Both performances have impressed fans, solidifying Lambert’s reputation as one of the finest vocalists of his generation.
The Kennedy Center Honors is one of the highest recognitions an American performer can receive. For 44 years, this awards ceremony has honored individuals for their lifelong achievements in the arts. Other recipients at the 2018 ceremony included country music superstar Reba McEntire, jazz composer Wayne Shorter, Philip Glass, and Lin-Manuel Miranda along with the team from Hamilton.
