How Vince Gill reacted to being told not to sing about Jesus
Vince Gill, a prolific country music artist, has released over 20 albums and garnered numerous awards, including more Grammys than any other male country performer. Gill rose to prominence in 1979 as part of the country rock band Pure Prairie League and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Even after four decades, Gill remains highly sought after as a musician, recently performing with Little Big Town at the Grand Ole Opry. During this performance, Gill faced a dilemma as a devoted Christian: he was prohibited from singing songs that mentioned Jesus.
Undeterred, Gill chose to creatively defy the restriction. Instead of abandoning his faith, he performed “Why Me Lord,” a poignant song written by Kris Kristofferson in 1972 and famously covered by Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The crowd’s standing ovation affirmed the power of Gill’s performance. His courage in staying true to his beliefs and artistic identity shone through.
Gill’s rightful place in the Country Music Hall of Fame underscores his autonomy in making such choices. Watch his rendition of “Why Me Lord” here:
